Question:

One of my children caught Norovirus. Do I have to make my two kids sleep in separate rooms? Both of them refuse to sleep with their dad, so I am wondering if it is okay for them to just sleep together in the same room.

Answer:

Norovirus is highly contagious, so it is highly recommended to have them sleep separately if possible. However, I understand that this is a difficult situation realistically.

【Prevention Methods If They Sleep Together】

• Use separate pillows and blankets.

• If the sick child vomits, ventilate and disinfect the room immediately.

• Wash hands thoroughly (especially after using the bathroom).

• Never share towels or cups.

【Highly Contagious Period】

→ The virus is most contagious for 48-72 hours after symptoms begin.

→ The virus can be shed for up to 2 weeks even after symptoms disappear.

【Realistic Alternatives】

• Sleep in the same room, but keep their beds/blankets as far apart as possible.

• Prepare a basin at the head of the sick child's bed.

• Wear disposable gloves and a mask when caring for the sick child.

It is highly likely that your other child has already been exposed, but please observe them while trying your best to prevent transmission. The second child may also develop symptoms within 24-48 hours, so watch them closely and visit the hospital immediately if they show signs of dehydration.
