Question: My baby is just over a week old and is exclusively formula-fed. Should I be giving her water to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated?

Answer: Newborns do not need extra water, even if they are on formula. Formula provides all the hydration and nutrients your baby needs. Giving water at this age can actually be harmful because:

* Risk of Overhydration: A newborn's kidneys are not fully developed, and too much water can upset the balance of electrolytes in their body. * Interferes with Nutrition: Water can fill your baby’s tiny stomach, leaving less room for the formula, which contains essential nutrients.

What You Should Do:

* Stick to Formula Only: Feed your baby formula as per the instructions on the packaging or your doctor’s advice. It will keep your baby well-hydrated and nourished. * Monitor for Dehydration: Signs of dehydration include fewer than 6 wet diapers a day, dark yellow urine, or a sunken soft spot on the baby’s head. If you notice these, consult your doctor.

If you have concerns about your baby’s hydration or feeding, it’s best to discuss them with your pediatrician. Let me know if you have any other questions
