Question:

My 6-year-old child has a fever of 39.3°C (102.7°F). I noticed their head was warm, but they are sleeping very soundly. Should I wake them up to give a fever reducer, or should I let them sleep?

Answer:

I understand your concern seeing your 6-year-old with a 39.3°C fever, even though they are sleeping peacefully.

【Assessing the Current Situation】

If your child is sleeping well, it's a good sign that they are not feeling significant discomfort from the fever. Remember, fever reducers are used to alleviate a child's discomfort, not just to lower the number on the thermometer.

【Recommendations】

• Do not wake your child now - Uninterrupted sleep is more beneficial for recovery.

• Maintain a room temperature of 24-26°C (75-79°F) and cover them with only a light blanket.

• Keep a cup of water by their bedside so they can drink it as soon as they wake up.

• Gently check on them every 1-2 hours: listen to their breathing, check their face color, and see if they are sweating.

【When to Administer a Fever Reducer】

→ Give it if they wake up and seem uncomfortable, fussy, or in pain.

→ Consider waking them to give medicine if the fever rises above 40°C (104°F).

→ If they wake up naturally during the night, offer water first, then medicine if needed.

⚠️ Go to the ER Immediately If:

• They have difficulty breathing.

• They are difficult to arouse or won't wake up.

• They have a seizure or exhibit unusual movements.

Right now, sleeping comfortably is the best medicine. You should try to get some rest beside them, too
