Question:

Since yesterday evening, my child has been complaining that their calves feel tight. Today, they say the same tight feeling happens every time they walk, and now their thighs are also hurting a bit. Is this simply muscle pain?

Answer:

Your child is complaining of calf and thigh pain. You must be very worried.

First, here are a few things to check:

• How old is your child?

• Has their recent exercise or activity level been higher than usual?

• Do they have a fever or any other symptoms?

• Is the painful area swollen or red?

Typical Growing Pains vs. Muscle Pain:

[Growing Pains] Mainly affects children ages 3-12, worsens in the evening/night, occurs in both legs, and is usually fine in the morning.

[Muscle Pain] Occurs after physical activity, worsens with movement, and is localized to a specific area.

What you can do right now:

1. Apply a warm compress for 15-20 minutes.

2. Massage the area gently.

3. Ensure adequate fluid intake.

4. Administer Tylenol (acetaminophen) if necessary (dosage based on body weight).

⚠️ When a hospital visit is needed:

→ Limping or having difficulty walking

→ Severe pain in only one leg

→ Swelling, redness, or a feeling of heat in the painful area

→ Pain lasting more than 3 days or worsening

→ Accompanied by a fever or rash

Most muscle pain improves within 2 to 3 days, but if your child continues to feel uncomfortable, it would be best to visit a pediatrician for an evaluation.
