Question:

My baby is exactly 64 days old today. For the past two days, their body temperature has been fluctuating between 37.6°C and 37.9°C. They haven't had a drastic decrease in their appetite, nor are they acting lethargic. Is this temperature range okay? Should I take them to the pediatrician if this temperature persists? The mild fever isn't constant; there are times when it returns to a normal range of 36.9°C to 37.3°C.

Answer:

It is completely understandable to be concerned about your 64-day-old baby's temperature fluctuations. For a 2-month-old infant, even mild changes must be observed very carefully.

Here is an evaluation of the current situation:

• A temperature between 37.6°C and 37.9°C is considered a borderline mild fever.

• It is a very positive sign that your baby is still eating well and remains active.

• The fluctuating temperature pattern is notable and requires continued monitoring.

When to seek immediate emergency care:

• Go to the nearest emergency room immediately if the temperature reaches 38.0°C (100.4°F) or higher.

• If the baby's feeding amount drops to less than half of their usual intake.

• If the baby has not produced a wet diaper for 8 hours or more.

• If the baby is having difficulty breathing or making grunting noises.

What you can do at home:

  1. Measure and record your baby's temperature every 4 hours.

  2. Keep a detailed log of feeding times and amounts.

  3. Dress your baby lightly in just one thin layer of clothing.

  4. Maintain a comfortable room temperature between 22°C and 24°C (71°F to 75°F).

Because 2-month-old babies have developing immune systems, seemingly small illnesses can progress rapidly. If the temperature continues to reach 37.6°C or higher by tomorrow, or if you notice any changes in your baby's usual behavior, please visit a pediatrician for an in-person evaluation. Until then, continue to closely monitor your baby's temperature, feeding, and overall activity.
