Question:

After our baby had the stomach flu, my husband and I started experiencing nausea and headaches. I woke up feeling nauseous this morning, and eating made my stomach feel worse. My head is throbbing, and I feel dizzy. Is it possible that we caught the stomach flu from our child?

Answer:

I am so sorry to hear that you and your husband are experiencing similar symptoms after your baby's stomach flu. That must be incredibly exhausting for you.

Yes, it is highly likely that your baby's gastroenteritis has been transmitted to you. Viral stomach bugs spread very commonly among family members.

[What to do now]

• Hydration: Drink water or sports drinks in small, frequent sips (do not gulp a lot down at once).

• Rest: Take turns resting with your partner if possible.

• Diet: Eat light, easy-to-digest foods like porridge, oatmeal, or plain toast.

• Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom or changing diapers.

[Symptom Management]

• Nausea: Drinking ginger tea or peppermint tea can help settle your stomach.

• Headache / Dizziness: These symptoms are often caused by dehydration, making fluid replacement extremely important.

• If Vomiting: Rest your stomach for about 30 minutes, then try taking very small sips of water.

[When to see a doctor]

• You have bloody stools or severe abdominal pain.

• You have a persistent high fever (above 38.5°C or 101.3°F).

• You show signs of severe dehydration (decreased urination, very dry mouth).

• Your symptoms last for more than 3 days.

It is incredibly overwhelming to care for a sick child when you as parents are also sick. Please don't hesitate to ask family or friends for help, and try to do only the bare minimum around the house today. These viral bugs usually improve within 2 to 3 days. Hang in there!
