Question:

I am currently traveling abroad with my 3-year-old child. They had a fever earlier, so I gave them acetaminophen at 5:30 AM, and the fever has now gone down. We have to take a boat soon. Is it safe to give my child motion sickness medicine? If it is allowed and their fever returns later, do I need to leave a time gap between the motion sickness medicine and the next dose of the fever reducer? If so, how much time should I wait?

Answer:

It must be very stressful to deal with your child's fever, especially while traveling abroad. Here is the guidance regarding the medications and your trip:

Taking Motion Sickness Medicine

You can safely give your child motion sickness medicine immediately after they have taken acetaminophen. These two medications have different active ingredients and do not interact with each other.

Timing for the Next Fever Reducer Dose

If the fever returns, you do not need to wait a specific amount of time after giving the motion sickness medicine to administer the fever reducer. However, you must observe the proper time interval for the acetaminophen itself:

  • Minimum Interval: Always wait at least 4 hours between doses of acetaminophen.

  • Next Dose: Since the first dose was given at 5:30 AM, the next dose can be given anytime after 9:30 AM if the fever returns.

  • Maximum Limit: Do not give more than 5 doses of acetaminophen in a single 24-hour period.

Helpful Tips for Your Trip

  • Administer the motion sickness medicine about 30 minutes before boarding the boat for it to be effective.

  • Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

  • Keep your child comfortable in a cool environment and dress them in lightweight clothing.

  • Check their temperature frequently.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Please visit a local hospital or clinic immediately if you observe any of the following warning signs:

  • A high fever of 39°C (102.2°F) or higher that does not come down.

  • Severe vomiting that prevents your child from keeping water or medication down.

  • Your child becomes severely lethargic, limp, or unresponsive.

  • The appearance of a rash or if the child experiences convulsions (seizures).

Wishing your child a speedy recovery and hoping you have a safe and comfortable boat ride!
