Question:

Hello doctor. My child does not have a fever but is complaining of a severe sore throat. The doctor at the clinic mentioned that fever reducers also work as painkillers and advised me to give some if the pain is too much. Should I use the same dosage as I would for a fever? I am worried about giving a fever-reducing dose when there is no fever. My child is 8 years old and weighs 31 kg. How much should I give for pain relief?
Answer:
It can be tough caring for a child who is suffering from a severe sore throat.
To answer your main question: The dosage for pain relief is exactly the same as the dosage for fever reduction. It is perfectly safe to give this medication to relieve pain even if your child does not have a fever.
Based on your child's weight (31 kg), here are the recommended dosages depending on the active ingredient you have at home:
✅ Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol)
Dosage: 310–465 mg (10–15 mg/kg)
Interval: Every 4–6 hours, up to 5 times a day
Calculated by bottle concentration:
If using a 160 mg/5 mL product → give 9.7–14.5 mL
If using an 80 mg/mL product → give 3.9–5.8 mL
✅ Ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin, Advil)
Dosage: 155–310 mg (5–10 mg/kg)
Interval: Every 6–8 hours, up to 4 times a day
Calculated by bottle concentration:
If using a 100 mg/5 mL product → give 7.8–15.5 mL
If using a 20 mg/mL product → give 7.8–15.5 mL
【What to do at home】
Carefully check the "mg/mL" concentration on the label of the medicine bottle you have.
Measure the medication accurately using an enclosed dosing syringe or measuring cup.
Administer the medication only when the child is uncomfortable with the pain.
Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids and offer soft, easy-to-swallow foods.
【When to seek immediate medical evaluation】
Please bring your child in to see a doctor if you notice any of the following:
Difficulty swallowing saliva or excessive drooling
Changes in voice or difficulty breathing
Symptoms lasting more than 3 days or getting worse
The onset of a high fever (38.5°C / 101.3°F or higher)
