Question:

Illustration for the question: My child took their first flu medication at 2 PM. Do I have to give the next dose at 2 AM, or…

Hello, my child was just diagnosed with the flu. The pharmacy did not explain the dosing schedule, but I read that the medication should be given every 12 hours. Is this correct? I gave the first dose at 2:00 PM today. Does this mean I have to wake my child up to give the next dose at 2:00 AM? Or can I wait and give the next dose at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning to readjust the schedule?

Answer:

Hello! I understand you are worried about your child's flu diagnosis.

You are correct that flu medications (such as Tamiflu or Oseltamivir) are generally taken at 12-hour intervals. However, you can safely adjust the schedule on the first day to avoid disrupting your child's sleep!

How to adjust the dosing schedule:

Since you gave the first dose at 2:00 PM today:

• Tonight: Give the second dose around 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM (an 8 to 9-hour interval is perfectly fine).

• From tomorrow onwards: You can then give the medication regularly at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

Important points to remember:

• Taking the medication consistently within the first 48 hours is the most important factor.

• Do not wake your child up in the middle of the night just to give the medicine. Quality sleep is crucial for their recovery!

• Ensure your child completes the entire 5-day course without skipping any doses, even if their symptoms improve.

• If your child vomits within 1 hour of taking the medication, you should administer another dose.

When to revisit the hospital:

Please consult your pediatrician or visit a doctor if you notice any of the following:

• The fever continues even after 3 days of taking the medication.

• Your child experiences difficulty breathing or chest pain.

• Severe vomiting prevents your child from keeping the medication down.

• Their symptoms suddenly worsen.

Flu medication helps relieve symptoms and shortens the duration of the illness. Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and stays well-hydrated to support a quick recovery!
