Hello doctor! Thankfully, it wasn't Guillain-Barré syndrome, and my baby is walking well now. Thank you for your previous advice. However, pneumonia bacteria were detected, and we were prescribed medication to take three times a day until next Monday. Right now, my baby has no fever and no cough. But when taking this medicine, my baby looks haggard and is constantly sleepy. Since the symptoms are gone, is it okay to stop the medication early?

Answer:

Hello! I am so glad to hear that it wasn't Guillain-Barré syndrome and that your child is walking well. That is very reassuring!

Regarding the pneumonia antibiotic treatment:

Principles of Taking Antibiotics

You must absolutely not stop the medication early! Even if the symptoms have disappeared, you need to complete the full course of antibiotics prescribed.

Here is why:

• The pneumonia bacteria are not completely gone yet.

• Stopping early can allow the surviving bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance, which is much more dangerous.

• If the infection relapses, your child will need even stronger antibiotics to treat it.

Managing Side Effects

Looking haggard and feeling excessively sleepy can be mild side effects of the antibiotics. Here are some tips to help your child cope:

• Give the medication immediately after meals.

• Administer probiotics to help support their digestive system (give them about 2 hours apart from the antibiotics).

• Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids.

• Adjust their nap times during the day to help them maintain a good sleep schedule at night.

⚠️ Consult a doctor immediately if you notice:

• Severe diarrhea or vomiting

• Skin rashes or hives

• Shortness of breath or facial swelling

Please make sure your child finishes the prescribed medication until Monday. If the side effects—such as the sleepiness or lethargy—seem too severe, consult your prescribing pediatrician to discuss adjusting the dosage or changing the prescription. Changing the medication safely under a doctor's guidance is always much safer than abruptly stopping it on your own!
