Question:

My child was diagnosed with pneumonia, but they don't have a cough. However, the doctor prescribed a bronchodilator patch and nebulizer treatments. I applied the patch since it was prescribed, but I am curious why these treatments are necessary if there is no coughing.

Answer:

I understand your curiosity regarding the prescription of a patch and nebulizer for a child diagnosed with pneumonia without a cough.

Even in the absence of coughing, respiratory treatments are highly beneficial in pneumonia for the following reasons:

• Bronchodilator Patch

  • It widens the airways, making breathing more comfortable.

  • It helps thin and expel phlegm, which promotes recovery from pneumonia.

  • It provides a continuous and effective absorption of the medication over time.

• Nebulizer Treatment

  • It delivers medication directly into the lungs.

  • It helps reduce inflammation and clear airway secretions.

  • It effectively improves lung function, even if the child is not actively coughing.

Pneumonia without a cough actually requires careful attention. Because the child is not coughing naturally, phlegm and secretions may not be expelled properly, which can sometimes delay recovery. These treatments are specifically prescribed to assist in that clearing process.

Please continue using the treatments exactly as prescribed. Ensure your child gets plenty of rest and stays well-hydrated. Typically, you should start to see improvement within 48 to 72 hours.

⚠️ Please visit your pediatrician or an emergency room immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Breathing becomes fast, difficult, or labored

  • Fever persists for more than 3 days

  • The child becomes severely lethargic or refuses to eat and drink
