Question:

When will my baby's umbilical cord fall off? I heard it usually falls off within 14 days, but my baby is 24 days old and it still hasn't fallen off yet. Should I take my baby to the hospital? I am currently cleaning and disinfecting the area every morning and evening.

Answer:

You must be very worried that the umbilical cord hasn't fallen off even on the 24th day. Although most fall off within two weeks, it can take up to 3-4 weeks for some babies, so it is still within the normal range.

【Check the Current Status】

• Is the area around the umbilical cord red or swollen?

• Is there any pus or a bad odor?

• Does the baby have a fever or seem unusually fussy?

【Management Methods】

1. Keep up the good work with the disinfection you are currently doing.

2. Fold the diaper down so it does not rub against or touch the umbilical cord.

3. Dry the area completely after a bath.

4. Do not try to forcefully pull it off.

【When to Visit the Hospital】

→ Redness and swelling around the umbilical cord

→ Pus or a bad odor

→ Bleeding that does not stop

→ Baby has a fever (38°C or higher)

If none of the above symptoms are present and your baby is eating and playing well, you can observe for another week. However, if it goes past 30 days, please visit a pediatrician for an evaluation.

If you wait just a little longer, it will fall off naturally!
