Question:

Hello doctor. My child was recently sick, hospitalized, and on medication, which caused us to miss their flu vaccination. We were planning to get it done soon, but unfortunately, my husband just caught the flu today. Should we still get our child vaccinated right now? I am so worried that since the father has it, the child will inevitably catch it too.

Answer:

Hello! You must be very worried, especially after your child just recovered from being sick and now the father has caught the flu.

Here is what you need to know regarding the flu vaccination in your current situation:

Vaccination in the Current Situation

  • Even though the father has the flu, your child can still be vaccinated.

  • It is actually quite urgent, as it takes about two weeks for antibodies to fully develop after the vaccine is administered.

  • However, since your child was recently hospitalized and on medication, you must consult your pediatrician to confirm if they are cleared to receive the vaccine right now.

When Immediate Vaccination is Possible

  • The child has no fever and has recovered their overall condition.

  • Taking antibiotics is generally okay.

  • Having only mild cold symptoms is usually acceptable.

When Vaccination Should be Delayed

  • The child currently has a fever.

  • The child is experiencing moderate to severe illness.

  • The child is undergoing specific drug treatments (such as high-dose steroids).

Immediate Preventive Measures at Home

  1. Minimize contact between the father and the child (the father must wear a mask).

  2. Wash hands frequently (especially before anyone touches or interacts with the child).

  3. Use separate eating utensils and towels for the father.

  4. Ventilate the house frequently to ensure good air circulation.

Please contact your pediatrician's office as soon as possible to check if your child can receive the vaccine based on their recent medical history. If the doctor gives the clearance, it is highly recommended to get the vaccine without delay. Wishing your family a quick return to good health!
