Question:

My 35-month-old child has had a high fever for four days, reaching up to 104.7°F (40.4°C). Since the fever started, they've been blinking their eyes frequently. They also have a severe cough. With fever reducers, the temperature drops to the 100s (°F) / 38s (°C). Thankfully, my child is still playful and has good energy. I forgot to ask the doctor about the eye blinking during our visit. Could the high fever be causing this?

Answer:

Hello. It's understandable to be concerned about your 35-month-old's high fever for four days and the associated eye blinking.

Eye blinking during a high fever can have several causes:

【Common Causes】

• Eye dryness/fatigue due to the high fever

• Tearing/irritation from coughing

• Tic-like symptoms due to fatigue

• Increased sensitivity to light

【When to Return to the Hospital Immediately】

→ If the eye blinking suddenly worsens or is accompanied by convulsions in the face or other parts of the body

→ If your child becomes drowsy, less responsive, or difficult to wake

→ If they develop a stiff neck or show an extreme aversion to light

→ If their eyes deviate or look to one side

It's a relief that your child is currently playing well and seems to have good energy. However, a high fever exceeding 40°C for four days may require further evaluation.

【What You Can Do Now】

• Slightly dim the indoor lighting.

• Ensure adequate fluid intake to help keep their eyes moist.

• Reduce screen time (TV/smartphones).

At your next doctor's visit, be sure to mention the eye blinking and the persistence of the high fever. If the fever continues for more than five days, additional tests may be necessary.
