Question:

My older child caught the flu but has been fever-free for almost 24 hours, so their isolation period is about to end. My younger child currently has no symptoms but is staying home from daycare just in case. When is it safe for my younger child to go back to daycare?

Answer:

It is a relief to hear that your older child is recovering well.

Regarding your younger child's return to daycare:

If your younger child has no symptoms, they can go to daycare immediately. Flu isolation is strictly symptom-based, meaning there is no need to quarantine a child simply because they were in contact with someone who has the flu. You only need to keep them at home if they develop symptoms such as a fever, cough, runny nose, or sore throat. If those symptoms do appear, they should rest at home and can return to daycare only after being completely fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Regarding your older child's isolation end:

Since they have been fever-free for 24 hours without medication and their overall condition is improving, they can return to school or daycare tomorrow. However, for the next 5 days, they should wear a mask, practice strict hand hygiene, and avoid contact with high-risk individuals such as young infants or the elderly.

What to watch for in your younger child:

Please monitor them closely for the next 2 to 4 days to see if a fever or cough begins. As long as they remain symptom-free, they can continue with their normal daily routine.

In summary, your younger child can attend daycare now if they are asymptomatic. If any flu-like symptoms develop, please keep them home and consult your pediatrician for an accurate assessment.
