Question:

It has been 48 hours since my child's fever broke after catching the flu, and we are currently on day 4 since the diagnosis. Yesterday (day 3 of the flu), we visited a clinic for my child's severe nasal congestion and were prescribed steroid pills (Methysone tablets, a corticosteroid). I gave the medication to my child yesterday, but I later realized that I forgot to mention the recent flu diagnosis to the doctor. Is it safe for my child to take these steroid pills while recovering from the flu?

Answer:

It is completely understandable that you are worried about your child taking steroid medications during a flu recovery.

To evaluate the current situation: your child is on day 4 of the flu, it has been 48 hours since the fever resolved, and they are taking a prescribed steroid (Methysone) for nasal congestion.

Steroids and the Flu

Generally, steroids are used with caution in patients who have the flu. However, if your child is already undergoing antiviral treatment and their fever has successfully subsided, a short-term course of steroids is often permissible. A doctor may prescribe them based on clinical judgment if the nasal congestion is significantly uncomfortable or severe.

Immediate Steps to Take

While a short-term, low-dose course of steroids usually does not cause major issues, the safest approach is to verify this with the prescribing physician.

  • Please call the clinic that prescribed the steroids today.

  • Inform the doctor about the recent flu diagnosis and ask if you should continue the Methysone.

  • Make sure to tell them the exact name of the flu medication (such as Tamiflu) your child is currently taking.

Symptoms to Monitor

While you continue to monitor your child's recovery, please seek immediate in-person medical evaluation if you notice any of the following:

  • The fever returns.

  • Coughing or difficulty breathing worsens.

  • Your child's overall energy or condition suddenly deteriorates.

Please contact your prescribing doctor's office today to ensure the treatment plan is fully tailored and safe for your child's specific situation.
