My child received their flu vaccine today, but was unfortunately diagnosed with Mycoplasma pneumonia on the very same day. I am worried about whether the flu vaccination will still be effective despite the active pneumonia infection. Will the illness or the treatment affect the vaccine's efficacy?

Yes, the flu vaccine will still be fully effective!
The flu vaccine and Mycoplasma are completely separate medical concerns:
• Flu Vaccine: Prevents the influenza virus.
• Mycoplasma: A bacterial infection (completely unrelated to the flu vaccine).
Developing pneumonia symptoms on the exact day of vaccination is simply a coincidence. Mycoplasma pneumonia has an incubation period of 1 to 3 weeks. This means your child was already infected prior to receiving the shot, and the symptoms just happened to surface on the same day.

• The flu vaccine's protective effect naturally takes about 2 weeks to build up, and this process will continue normally.
• Your child's immune system will successfully produce flu antibodies even while they are recovering from pneumonia.
• Taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection does not interfere with the effectiveness of a viral vaccine like the flu shot.
Mycoplasma pneumonia responds very well to appropriate antibiotics (such as azithromycin), so please do not worry too much.
