Question:

My child's fever finally went down after three days! They haven't had any fever since 7 AM this morning, and their temperature is still normal right now. Is it okay to end the flu isolation? My child still has a cough, so I am planning to take them to the doctor tomorrow.

Answer:

I am glad to hear that the fever has safely gone down after three days.

Flu Isolation Release Criteria

According to public health guidelines, a patient can return to normal daily activities when both of the following conditions are met:

• Overall symptoms are improving, AND

• There has been no fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Since your child has been fever-free since 7 AM today, you need to monitor them until 7 AM tomorrow to ensure the fever does not return without the help of medication.

Checking Symptoms Before Tomorrow's Doctor Visit

• If the cough suddenly worsens or your child experiences shortness of breath, please seek a medical evaluation today.

• If 24 hours pass without a fever and only the cough remains, keeping your scheduled doctor's appointment tomorrow is perfectly fine.

Precautions for 5 Days After Returning to Daily Life

Even after the isolation ends, it is highly recommended to wear a mask, wash hands frequently, and minimize contact with high-risk individuals (such as infants and the elderly) for the next 5 days.

If your child remains fever-free through tonight and reaches the 24-hour mark, they can safely go out tomorrow. Please make sure to have the lingering cough checked by your pediatrician during tomorrow's visit.
