Question:

Last Monday, my child was diagnosed with the flu. By Friday, the doctor said they were cleared to return to kindergarten. However, I heard there is currently a flu outbreak at the school. Is it possible for my child to catch the flu again if I send them back?

Answer:

It is completely understandable to worry about a flu reinfection. The good news is that once your child recovers from the flu, they build immunity and will not catch the exact same viral strain again!

Possibility of Flu Reinfection

  • Same Strain: Safe, as the body has generated immunity against it.

  • Different Strain: It is possible to catch a different strain of the flu, but the overall probability is relatively low. Currently, Type A strains (such as H1N1 and H3N2) are the most prevalent.

Precautions When Returning to Kindergarten

  1. Strict Hand Hygiene: Encourage washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.

  2. Mask Wearing: Consider having your child wear a mask, especially indoors.

  3. Nutrition and Hydration: Ensure they drink plenty of fluids and eat well-balanced meals.

  4. Adequate Rest: Avoid overexertion, as the body is still recovering its full strength.

Reinfection vs. Normal Recovery Symptoms

It is completely normal for a mild cough or fatigue to linger for up to two weeks during the recovery phase. However, if your child suddenly develops a new high fever or severe body aches, please consult your pediatrician for an evaluation.

Flu Vaccine Considerations

If your child has already received the flu vaccine this season, they will have some level of cross-protection against other circulating strains. If they have not been vaccinated yet, consider getting the flu shot about two weeks after they have fully recovered.

Even with an ongoing flu outbreak at the kindergarten, your child is relatively safe since they just had it. You can send them back to school with peace of mind, as long as they continue to follow basic hygiene practices!
