Question:
My child is complaining that they have no strength in their hands. They are also experiencing a tight, cramped feeling in their muscles, specifically in their calves and arms, which feels like muscle pain. Could these be early symptoms of the flu?
Answer:
It must be very concerning to see your child experiencing weakness in their hands and complaining of muscle pain.
The symptoms you mentioned can indeed be early signs of the flu:
• Characteristics of the flu: Sudden muscle pain, generalized weakness, and high fever.
• Other possibilities: Common cold, dehydration, or electrolyte imbalance.
Please check the following right now:
1. Measure their body temperature - The flu typically causes a sudden onset of fever, usually 38.5°C (101.3°F) or higher.
2. Check for other symptoms - Look out for a headache, chills, cough, or sore throat.
3. Assess their fluid intake - Dehydration can also lead to muscle weakness.
→ Go to the emergency room immediately if you notice:
• Progression of numbness or paralysis in the hands and feet
• Difficulty breathing
• Decreased level of consciousness or lethargy
→ A medical consultation today is recommended if:
• The symptoms are accompanied by a high fever
• The muscle weakness worsens
• The child is having difficulty performing daily activities
At home: Ensure they get plenty of fluids and rest, and keep a log of their symptoms.
If the flu is suspected, early antiviral treatment is very important, so please seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible.
