Question:

My child recently took a respiratory virus test, and we are waiting for the results. I was wondering, can this test also determine if my child has the flu (influenza)?

Answer:

I understand you are curious about the respiratory virus test. Whether the flu (influenza) is included in the respiratory virus test depends on the specific type of test performed.

General Respiratory Panel Test

Most comprehensive respiratory panels typically include:

• Influenza A and B (Flu)

• RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

• COVID-19

• Adenovirus

• Parainfluenza

• Rhinovirus, and others.

How to Check if the Flu was Included

• Look for "Influenza A/B" on your test request form or the final result sheet.

• Generally, if the test was a "Respiratory Virus PCR Panel," the flu is included.

• You can contact the clinic or hospital directly to confirm if the flu was part of the specific panel your child received.

If the flu was not included in the test your child took, a separate rapid antigen test for the flu can be done additionally.

Once the results are out, you will be able to see a clear list of the specific viruses that were tested. Keep in mind that during flu season, most clinics will automatically include influenza in respiratory tests. If you remain unsure about what was covered, please contact your pediatrician or the clinic where the test was performed for clarification.
