Question:

My baby is recovering from gastroenteritis and is still on medication. This evening, they became very fussy, and I noticed their belly is extremely bloated and taut, more than I've ever seen, even after a big meal. They had loose stools earlier today. Could this be gas or something else? Should I finish the last day of medication? When should I see a doctor?

Answer:

It must be worrying that your baby's belly is bloated after having gastroenteritis. When intestinal function is weakened by gastroenteritis, gas can build up, or bowel movements may not be smooth.

Check these things now:

• Does it hurt when you gently press the belly?

• Is the belly hard like a rock, or taut like a balloon?

• Is your baby passing gas?

What you can do immediately:

1. Tummy massage - Gently massage clockwise around the belly button for 5-10 minutes.

2. Bicycle leg exercise - Bend and straighten the legs towards the belly.

3. Cover the belly with warm hands.

4. Hydration - Offer small sips of water frequently.

⚠️ Go to the ER if:

→ The belly is rock-hard and your baby cries in severe pain when touched.

→ Vomiting starts or a fever develops.

→ There has been no stool or gas for more than 8 hours.

Make a doctor's appointment for tomorrow morning, but if symptoms worsen during the night, go to the ER immediately. Continue the gastroenteritis medication as prescribed by the doctor until it is finished.
