Question: My 9-month-old grandson recently had a well-child visit. He is a normal weight and size for his age and takes no medications. At this appointment, his head circumference was measured in the 7th percentile. His head has always been on the smaller side, but this has caused some concern for the parents. He is hitting all his developmental milestones, his head and facial features look normal, and he is a very happy, social baby. We have an appointment with a pediatric neurologist coming up. What should we know about a small head circumference in an otherwise healthy infant?
Answer: The most important thing is that he's hitting all his milestones. That's a huge positive sign.
Also, if his head has always been on the smaller side and is growing steadily on his own curve, that's very reassuring. The neurologist will look at the previous measurements to see the trend. Sometimes, a smaller head size just runs in the family.
In Korea, having a small head is a standard of beauty lol
