Question:
My 5-year-old child does not have a fever but keeps complaining of a headache. Since there is no fever, should I still give them a fever reducer for the pain?
Answer:
It is understandable to be concerned when your 5-year-old child complains of a headache without a fever.
Things to Check Immediately
Please assess your child's condition by monitoring the following:
• Note exactly when the headache first started.
• Check if they are experiencing any vomiting or dizziness.
• Determine if they have recently bumped their head or suffered any head trauma.
What You Can Do Right Now
Have your child rest in a quiet, dark, and comfortable room.
Encourage them to sip water frequently to stay hydrated.
Place a cool, damp towel on their forehead.
It is safe to give them an over-the-counter fever reducer containing acetaminophen (such as Tylenol), as it also provides effective pain relief for headaches.
When to Visit a Hospital
Seek immediate medical attention if your child exhibits any of the following warning signs:
• A sudden, severe headache accompanied by vomiting
• A stiff neck or the sudden onset of a fever
• Blurred vision or slurred speech
• Confusion, altered consciousness, or talking nonsense
In most cases, childhood headaches are simply caused by fatigue, minor dehydration, or stress. However, if the headache persists despite sufficient rest and fluid intake, or if it occurs frequently, please consult your pediatrician for an accurate in-person evaluation.
