Question:

Hello doctor, I have a question regarding my 25-month-old child. Two days ago in the afternoon, my child had diarrhea four times, and I noticed some mucus in it. There was no fever until the next morning, but by the evening, my child seemed a bit lethargic and had a fever of 38°C. Since the temperature didn't go any higher, I put my child to sleep without giving any fever reducer. This morning, the fever is gone, but the watery diarrhea and slight stool leakage are still continuing. Should I take my child to the hospital, or is it okay to just give them warm water and observe the symptoms at home?

Answer:

Hello! You must be quite worried about your 25-month-old child's enteritis symptoms.

Based on the current symptoms, it appears to be a case of mild enteritis:

• Persistent diarrhea/loose stools for two days

• Fluctuating mild fever (around 38°C)

• Mucoid stool (a sign of intestinal inflammation)

【Cases manageable at home】

→ Hydration is being maintained well

→ Normal urine output (4-6 times a day)

→ Able to play and engage in normal activities

→ Fever is 38.5°C or below

【When to visit the hospital immediately】

• Bloody or black stools

• No urination for more than 8 hours

• Severe lethargy or sluggishness

• Inability to drink fluids due to vomiting

• Crying severely from abdominal pain

Home care guidelines:

1. Hydration is the top priority - offer water and electrolyte drinks in small, frequent amounts.

2. BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice porridge, Applesauce, and Toast.

3. Temporarily stop dairy products (they can worsen diarrhea).

4. Probiotics may be helpful.

Please make sure to consult a doctor if there is no improvement within 2-3 days or if the symptoms worsen. It is very reassuring to see that you are closely monitoring your child's condition!
