Question:
Hello! Two weeks ago, my 13-month-old baby had a persistent fever after their 12-month vaccinations. We tested for COVID-19, the flu, and urinary tract infections, but all came back negative. Three days later, a rash appeared, so we concluded it was Roseola and it resolved.
However, two weeks later (today), my baby suddenly seemed very tired in the afternoon and developed a fever of over 38°C in the evening. The fever went down after I gave them a fever reducer. Since there are no other symptoms besides the fever, could this be Roseola again?
Answer:
I understand you must be worried since your baby has a fever again just two weeks after recovering from Roseola.
【Current Situation】
Roseola (Sixth Disease) usually does not recur once a child has had it. The new fever that started today is highly likely due to a different viral infection.
【What to Do at Home Right Now】
• Only use fever reducers when your child is uncomfortable. (Even if the temperature is 38°C or higher, medication isn't strictly necessary if they are playing well).
• Dress your child in light clothing and offer small, frequent amounts of fluids.
• Keep an eye on their urine frequency and color, activity level, and appetite.
【Contact a Pediatrician or Urgent Care if ANY of the Following Occur】
• The fever lasts for 3 days or more.
• There is no urine output for 8 hours or more.
• Your child is severely lethargic, unable to make eye contact, or extremely fussy.
• Breathing seems fast or labored.
• A rash appears along with the fever (unlike Roseola, where the rash appears only after the fever drops).
【Reference】
Around their first birthday, it is common for babies to encounter various viruses one after another as their immune systems develop. It is very possible your child just caught a different cold virus two weeks after the previous one.
Please monitor the fever until tomorrow morning. If your child improves within a day or two without any of the warning signs listed above, you can continue to observe them at home. Let me know if there are any changes!
