Question:

Hello doctor. My 11-year-old child was treated for mycoplasma pneumonia at a local hospital. A month ago, their chest X-ray was clear, and two weeks after that, the cough sounded much better, so we officially concluded the treatment. However, occasionally, when my child coughs deeply or loudly, they mention experiencing a metallic taste in their mouth. Is the condition getting worse, or is this just a normal part of the healing process?

Answer:

Hello. I understand you must be worried about your child's recovery process after being treated for mycoplasma pneumonia.

Mycoplasma pneumonia is a disease that takes some time to fully recover from. Intermittent coughing can persist for up to 1 to 2 months even after the treatment is completed.

【Current Status Evaluation】

• Normal chest X-ray + improved cough sound = Good sign

• Intermittent cough + metallic taste = Can occur during the airway healing process

• Occurs only during a loud/deep cough = More likely a residual symptom rather than an acute exacerbation

【Management Methods】

1. Ensure plenty of fluid intake - 1.5 to 2 liters per day

2. Use a humidifier (maintain 40-60% humidity)

3. Avoid irritating foods

4. Get sufficient rest

【When to Revisit the Hospital】

→ If a fever starts again

→ If the cough gets progressively worse

→ If there is shortness of breath or chest pain

→ If there is blood-tinged sputum

→ If the symptoms persist after 2 weeks

In most cases, this will naturally improve over time. However, if the symptoms worsen or if you remain concerned, it would be a good idea to visit your attending physician for a follow-up consultation.
