Question: My baby, who is between 2 and 12 months old, has one tooth on the bottom and one on the top. The other bottom tooth hasn’t grown in yet. Is this normal? I thought the bottom two were supposed to come in together, followed by the top two. He has one bottom tooth and one top tooth on the same side.

Answer: Yes, that's pretty normal! Tooth eruption order can be a bit all over the place. While there's a "typical" pattern (bottom two, then top two), babies often do their own thing. As long as teeth are coming in, it's usually all good. I know an X-ray could show where the next teeth are, but I wouldn't want to expose a child to X-rays just for that unless medically necessary. If you're worried, you can always chat with your pediatrician or a pediatric dentist for peace of mind.
