Question: I am currently in my 13th week of pregnancy. At my 12-week ultrasound, my baby’s fetal heart rate (FHR) was around 172 bpm. At my 13-week appointment just a week later, the doctor measured the FHR with a Doppler and said it was between 150-160 bpm. I know the 150-160 range is normal for this stage, but is such a significant drop in just one week also normal? The baby seemed quiet during both appointments, so I don't think activity level explains the change. Thank you for your help!
Answer: That's a totally normal change! The fetal heart rate is typically at its highest around 9-12 weeks (often in the 170s) and then it starts to gradually decrease.
By 13 weeks, it's very common for it to settle into the 150-160 range, which is a perfect, healthy number. It's a normal part of their development as their nervous system matures. Also, the heart rate can change from moment to moment depending on whether the baby is sleeping or active.
