Question:

I have been taking antibiotics for a middle ear infection (otitis media) for about a month. I went to the doctor earlier today, and they said it hasn't fully healed, so I got another prescription. However, I took my last dose yesterday at 10 PM and missed my morning and lunch doses today. If I take my next dose tonight around 7 PM, will skipping these doses cause antibiotic resistance?

Answer:

It is completely understandable to be worried after dealing with a middle ear infection for over a month.

To answer your question directly: it is okay to take your next dose tonight at 7 PM, even after missing the morning and lunch doses today. Irregularly taking your medication for just one day will not immediately cause antibiotic resistance.

However, moving forward, please keep the following important guidelines in mind:

• Resume your regular dosing schedule starting today (as prescribed, usually 2 to 3 times a day).

• Complete the entire newly prescribed course of antibiotics.

• Do not arbitrarily stop taking the medication, even if your symptoms seem to improve.

Since you have been receiving treatment for a month without full resolution, your doctor is likely monitoring your condition closely. In prolonged cases, doctors often consider:

• Changing the type of antibiotic class if needed.

• Re-evaluating the physical condition of your eardrum.

• Checking for accompanying conditions like allergies or sinusitis that might be delaying your recovery.

⚠️ Please visit a doctor or emergency room immediately if you experience any of the following:

• High fever or severe, worsening ear pain

• Discharge or fluid leaking from the ear

• Hearing loss or dizziness

As a helpful tip, taking probiotics can be beneficial when you are on a long-term antibiotic treatment to help maintain a healthy gut flora. Please continue to follow up with your doctor for in-person evaluations until the infection is completely resolved.
