Question:
Hello doctor. I measured 8ml of a fever reducer in a medicine bottle and gave it to my child. However, about 20 minutes later, I realized there was still 2ml left in the bottle, so I immediately gave the remaining amount. In situations like this, is it better to give the rest or just skip the remaining amount? Thank you.
Answer:
Hello! You must have been worried about the dosage of the fever medication. Giving the remaining 2ml after 20 minutes is perfectly fine!
[What to do in this situation]
If discovered within 30 minutes: It is okay to immediately give the remaining amount (You did the right thing!).
If more than 1 hour has passed: It is better to skip it and wait until the next scheduled dosing time.
If the child vomits or spits it out: Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then try giving the same dose again.
[Tips for accurate dosing]
Check the measurements on the medicine bottle and double-check the amount right before putting it in your child's mouth.
Squeeze the medicine slowly toward the inside of the child's cheek (avoid aiming directly down the throat to prevent choking).
After they swallow, finish by giving them a sip of water.
For future reference, double-checking the dose before administering it will help give you peace of mind. I hope your child feels better soon!
