Question:
My baby had a severe cough and cold, so I got some medicine prescribed yesterday. However, I didn't see the instruction that the antihistamine was supposed to be taken only once a day. I gave it to my baby yesterday evening, and three times today. Will my baby be okay?
So far, my baby's general condition seems fine and there is no diarrhea or anything unusual, but I just realized my mistake. Also, I don't have enough medicine left for the remaining days. Should I go back to the clinic to get more?
Answer:
You must be very worried about the antihistamine overdose. Fortunately, most pediatric antihistamines have a wide safety margin, so accidental extra doses often do not cause major problems.
[Current Situation Assessment]
• Took a once-a-day medicine 3 times (3 times the prescribed dosage)
• Baby's current condition: Normal, no diarrhea or abnormal symptoms
• More than 24 hours have already passed since the first dose
[Things to Check Immediately]
1. Check the exact name and dosage of the medicine (on the prescription or medicine bag).
2. Note your baby's age and weight.
3. Check if there are any new symptoms such as unusual drowsiness, fussiness, or vomiting.
[Action Plan]
→ Stop giving the medicine for today and observe your baby.
→ Restart the medicine tomorrow according to the exact prescribed dosage.
→ Offer your baby plenty of water to drink frequently.
⚠️ When to go to the hospital:
• Severe drowsiness (cannot be woken up even when stimulated)
• Vomiting or abdominal pain
• Unusually slow breathing
• Abnormal behavior that is different from their usual self
Please visit the clinic to get an additional prescription to make up for the missing amount. You can simply explain to the doctor or pharmacist that you "accidentally gave extra doses."
If your baby is playing well right now, please do not worry too much. For the future, it can be very helpful to highlight the dosage instructions on the medicine bag with a highlighter to prevent this from happening again!
