Understanding Pneumococcal Infections

Pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae) is a type of bacteria that can cause respiratory infections, including pneumonia, ear infections (otitis media), and sinus infections. Since the X-ray showed phlegm along with nasal congestion and a runny nose, this indicates a bacterial respiratory infection that requires antibiotic treatment.

What You Can Do at Home Now

• Administer Antibiotics: Make sure your child takes the prescribed antibiotics at the exact times and dosages recommended by your doctor. It is crucial to finish the entire prescription, even if your child's symptoms seem to improve early.

• Hydration: Offer small, frequent amounts of water, breast milk, or formula. Keeping your child well-hydrated helps thin out the mucus and prevents dehydration.

Isolation Period

• However, daycare centers and schools often have their own specific illness policies, so please confirm the exact return date with your child's teacher or facility.

• The risk of transmitting the infection to other family members drops significantly once antibiotic treatment begins.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Have your child re-evaluated by a doctor right away if you notice any of the following warning signs:

• Breathing rapidly, or if the skin pulls in under the ribs or neck while breathing (retractions).

• Lips or fingernails turning blue or pale.

• No urination for more than 8 hours.

• Fever or symptoms worsening even after taking antibiotics for 48 hours.

• Severe lethargy, extreme sleepiness, or becoming unresponsive.

Your pediatrician should have provided guidance on the specific antibiotics, the duration of treatment, and a follow-up plan.
