Hello doctor. I have some liquid acetaminophen fever reducer that was prescribed by our doctor and dispensed into a plastic syrup bottle by the pharmacy about three months ago. I assume I shouldn't give this to my child anymore, right?

Answer:

You are correct. If the liquid acetaminophen was dispensed by a pharmacy and transferred from its original packaging into a separate container, such as a plastic syrup bottle, it is safest not to use it once three months have passed since the dispensing date.

Medications that have been opened and transferred to secondary containers have a significantly shorter shelf life due to the risk of bacterial contamination and potential degradation of the medicine's active ingredients. For your child's safety, please dispose of this old medication. If your child is currently experiencing a fever and needs medication, it is best to use a newly opened, sealed over-the-counter fever reducer or consult your pediatrician to get a fresh prescription.
