Question:

Hello doctor! Since yesterday, my child has been experiencing post-nasal drip, an occasional cough, and feels like they have phlegm. This morning, they mentioned a mild sore throat when swallowing, along with sneezing and a runny nose. They currently do not have a fever. I couldn't get a clinic appointment today, so we will have to go tomorrow.

I have some leftover medicine from a recent hospital visit. The prescription was changed midway due to a pneumonia diagnosis, so we have leftover packets that contain powdered antibiotics and symptom-relief syrups. Should I give this to my child in the meantime? Is it okay to give just the syrup and skip the antibiotic? Or should I give the antibiotic as well and ask the doctor tomorrow to prescribe the same kind? Thank you!

Answer:

Hello! It is completely understandable that you are worried about your child's discomfort. The symptoms you described—nasal congestion, phlegm, sore throat, and runny nose—appear to be signs of a typical upper respiratory tract infection (a common cold). It is very reassuring that there is no fever.

Regarding the use of leftover medication:

  • Do not use the leftover antibiotics: You should never administer leftover antibiotics without a current prescription. These were prescribed specifically for a previous pneumonia episode and may not be appropriate for the current illness. Unnecessary or arbitrary use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance.

  • Symptom-relief syrups: You may use leftover symptom-relief syrups (such as fever/pain reducers or runny nose medicine) to help your child feel more comfortable, but please verify the expiration date and ensure they were stored correctly before administering them.

Here is how you can manage the symptoms at home until your appointment:

  1. Encourage your child to drink warm water frequently.

  2. Use a humidifier or have them sit in a steamy bathroom to help clear their airways.

  3. If your child is over 1 year old, warm honey water can help soothe their sore throat.

  4. Ensure they get plenty of rest.

When you visit your pediatrician tomorrow, be sure to explain the current symptoms and their progression in detail, mention the recent history of pneumonia, and show the doctor the leftover medication you have.

Please seek immediate medical attention today if your child develops shortness of breath, a high fever, or if their symptoms rapidly worsen. Most common colds improve without the need for antibiotics, so it is best to have your child evaluated in person tomorrow for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
