Question:

My child was diagnosed with Influenza A on Saturday and received an IV flu treatment, but the fever has persisted until now (Monday morning). They are now experiencing chills, and even after taking fever reducers, their temperature remains around 38.6°C. They also have a cough. Should we get a blood test and an X-ray today?

Answer:

It is completely understandable that you are worried, especially since the fever has persisted into Monday despite starting flu treatment on Saturday.

Current Status & Red Flags

Even after receiving an IV flu treatment, it is common for a fever to last for another 2 to 3 days. However, you should seek immediate medical attention today if your child experiences any of the following:

• Breathing difficulties, such as the chest pulling in under the ribs (retractions) or wheezing

• Severe dehydration, such as drinking very little or having no urine output for 8 hours or more

• Extreme lethargy, difficulty waking up, or an inability to make eye contact

• Bluish discoloration of the lips or nails

Do you need additional tests?

Whether a blood test or an X-ray is necessary depends entirely on a doctor's physical examination. When you see your doctor today, you can ask them:

• "Is there a chance of a secondary bacterial infection?"

• "Will running these tests change the current treatment plan?"

• "Is it safe to continue observing at home for now?"

What you can do at home right now:

• Fever Reducers: Administer the appropriate dose based on your child's weight every 4 to 6 hours.

• Hydration: Offer small sips of fluids frequently, about every 5 to 10 minutes.

• Environment: Keep the room comfortably cool and dress your child in light, breathable clothing.

• Cough Relief: If your child is over 1 year old, giving 1 teaspoon of honey can help soothe their cough.

Since it has been three days without improvement and your child has developed chills, it is highly recommended that you revisit your doctor or go to an urgent care center today for an in-person evaluation.
