Question: In December 2022, my child received one flu shot and did not get the second one. In October 2023, they received another single dose, but then caught the flu, so we skipped the second shot. This year, in September 2024, they got one dose, and that clinic told us to come back in four weeks for dose two. However, we recently moved, and a different clinic told us that a second shot is not necessary. One clinic says they need it, and the other says they don't. Which recommendation is correct?

Answer: It is completely understandable to feel confused when different clinics provide conflicting recommendations regarding the influenza vaccination schedule.

Your child needs a second dose this season.

For children under 9 years of age, medical guidelines recommend two doses of the influenza vaccine given at least four weeks apart if they have not previously completed the two-dose primary series. Because your child received only a single dose in 2022 and a single dose in 2023 without completing the full series in a single season, they have not yet established adequate baseline immunity. Therefore, two doses are recommended for this current season.

Recommended Next Steps:

  • Follow the first clinic's guidance: Have your child receive the second dose four weeks after the first dose.

  • Bring immunization records: Present your child's past vaccination history to your new pediatrician or local health clinic so the provider can confirm the dates and update their immunization registry.

  • Future seasons: Once your child completes this two-dose series, they will only require a single annual flu shot in future years.

To ensure optimal protection against the flu this winter, consult your new pediatrician with your child's complete vaccination records to schedule the second dose.
