Question:

Hello, my child took an X-ray today, and the doctor noticed signs of pneumonia. We did a test for Mycoplasma pneumonia and will get the results soon. During a nap, my child sweated a lot, and I am wondering if it is okay to give them a shower. They have had a persistent mild fever (37.4°C - 37.9°C) throughout the day. Should I avoid giving my child a shower when they are showing signs of pneumonia?
Answer:
Hello. It is completely understandable to be worried about a suspected case of Mycoplasma pneumonia.
Yes, it is absolutely fine to give your child a shower even if they have pneumonia! In fact, if they have been sweating a lot, washing them will help keep them clean and comfortable. Taking a warm shower after sweating from a mild fever can actually help soothe your child and make them feel much better.
Here are some tips for a safe shower:
• Keep the shower short (5 to 10 minutes) using warm water.
• Pre-warm the bathroom before bringing the child in so they do not feel a chill.
• Towel-dry them immediately after the shower and dress them in warm, comfortable clothes.
• Ensure their hair is completely dried with a hairdryer.
A few precautions to keep in mind:
• If your child seems too exhausted or weak, skip the shower and simply wipe them down with a warm, damp washcloth instead.
• Stop the shower immediately if they start shivering or if their lips turn blue.
• Recheck their body temperature after the shower.
Make sure to keep your child warm and encourage plenty of fluid intake after washing. Continue to monitor their symptoms closely until you receive the test results, and be sure to follow up with your pediatrician as scheduled for proper treatment.
