Hello doctor. My child had some nasal cold symptoms, and yesterday morning, they developed a phlegm-producing cough. We visited a clinic and they are currently taking medication. However, the symptoms seemed to worsen last night, and now my child has a mild fever. A classmate was diagnosed with the flu on Thursday, so I am quite concerned. Does a child absolutely need to have a high fever over 38°C (100.4°F) to get tested for the flu? Since tomorrow is the weekend, I am wondering if I should take them to the doctor today.

Answer:

Hello! I completely understand your concern about the flu, especially since there is a confirmed case in your child's class.

A flu test is absolutely possible even if your child does not have a high fever over 38°C (100.4°F). The flu can be suspected when the following signs are present:

• Sudden onset of fever (including a mild fever)

• Worsening cough and phlegm

• Body aches, headache, or fatigue

• History of exposure (such as a classmate with a confirmed case)

I highly recommend taking your child to the doctor today for the following reasons:

  1. A rapid flu test is most accurate when performed within 48 hours of symptom onset.

  2. Antiviral medications (like Tamiflu) are most effective when started within the first 48 hours.

  3. Getting checked before the weekend allows you to start proper treatment right away if it is the flu.

When visiting the clinic, please ensure your child wears a mask, make sure to mention the confirmed flu case in their class to the doctor, and bring the medications they are currently taking so the doctor can review them.

At home, ensure your child gets plenty of rest and stays well-hydrated. If a sudden high fever or difficulty breathing occurs, please seek emergency medical care immediately.
