Question:

My child has a severe cough, so I applied their prescribed cough patch around 8:00 PM. However, when I checked on them before bedtime around 10:30 PM, the patch had fallen off somewhere. I have looked everywhere but cannot find it. In this case, should I apply a new patch right now, or should I just leave it as is for the night?
Answer:
It is completely understandable to be worried when a prescribed medication patch falls off. Since the patch was attached for about two and a half hours, it is very likely that a certain amount of the medication has already been absorbed into your child's body.
Here is how you should handle this situation:
Do not apply a new patch tonight: Applying another patch right now increases the risk of a medication overdose.
Wait until tomorrow: Leave it as is for tonight, and apply a new patch at the regularly scheduled time tomorrow.
Locate the fallen patch: Please continue looking for the lost patch until you find it. It is crucial to make sure it is completely out of your child's reach, as there is a serious risk of poisoning if they happen to put it in their mouth and swallow it.
To help relieve your child's cough tonight, you can try the following home care methods:
Use a humidifier in their room, or run hot water in the bathroom shower to let your child inhale the warm steam.
Elevate their head slightly with a pillow to help keep their airways clear.
Encourage them to drink warm water frequently (only if they are over 1 year old).
If your child's cough remains severe tomorrow morning, it is highly recommended to follow up with your prescribing doctor or pediatrician to reconfirm the proper patch dosage and usage.
⚠️ Emergency Warning Signs:
If your child shows any signs of breathing difficulty, wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing), or chest retractions (the skin sinking in around the ribs or neck with each breath), please take them to the nearest emergency room immediately.
