Hello. My 22-month-old baby's temperature spiked to 40.9°C. Just as I was about to give them a fever reducer, they experienced a seizure. This was their first febrile seizure. They shook for about 3 minutes, groaned for another 2 minutes, and then fell asleep. Should I wake my sleeping baby to give them the fever-reducing medication? If they sleep for a long time, should I force them to wake up?

Immediate Management Steps:

• Fever Reducer: Do not force the baby awake to give medication. Wait until they wake up naturally, and then administer it.

• Temperature Control: Dress your child in light clothing and maintain a comfortable room temperature around 24-26°C (75-79°F).

• Observation: Monitor their breathing closely by checking the rise and fall of their chest every 15 to 30 minutes.

• Hydration: Once awake, offer small, frequent sips of water or an electrolyte solution.

Seek Emergency Medical Help Immediately If:

• Another seizure begins.

• You notice abnormal breathing or their lips turn blue.

• You cannot wake them up after an hour of deep sleep.

• They exhibit unusual behavior after regaining consciousness.

Since this is your child's first febrile seizure, a clinical evaluation by a doctor is absolutely necessary. Please visit a pediatrician or an emergency room today.
