My 6-month-old baby caught a cold and has a fever. I am planning to give them a fever reducer. My baby currently weighs 10 kg. I am wondering if I should determine the medication dosage based on their age in months or their weight?

Answer:

You should always calculate fever-reducing medication dosages based on the child's weight, rather than their age!

Here is the general dosage guide for a 6-month-old baby weighing 10 kg:

Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol, based on 32mg/ml concentration):

• Dosage range: 100-150mg (3.1-4.7 ml)

• Recommended dose: 4 ml (128mg)

• Frequency: Every 4 to 6 hours, up to a maximum of 5 times a day.

• Please use a precise oral syringe or a dedicated medicine spoon for accurate measuring.

Ibuprofen (e.g., Brufen, based on 20mg/ml concentration):

• Dosage range: 50-100mg (2.5-5 ml)

• Recommended dose: 3.5 ml (70mg)

• Frequency: Every 6 to 8 hours, up to a maximum of 4 times a day.

• Ibuprofen is safe to use starting from 6 months of age.

⚠️ Important: Always double-check the exact concentration (mg/ml) written on your specific medication bottle, as different brands and formulas can vary!

You should only give a fever reducer when your baby is noticeably uncomfortable due to the fever. A baby's overall condition—whether they are eating, playing, and resting comfortably—is much more important than the exact number on the thermometer.

Please visit a doctor or an emergency room immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:

• The fever lasts for more than 3 days

• Your baby is having difficulty breathing

• There is no urination (dry diapers) for more than 8 hours

• Your baby is severely lethargic, overly drowsy, or unresponsive
